Senior Session Prep Guide: What to Know Before the Big Day
📸 By Jodee Wallin, Visual Creations Photography

Senior year is a huge milestone — one full of pride, nostalgia, and excitement for what’s next. Your senior portraits are more than just yearbook photos; they’re a celebration of who you are right now and a glimpse into who you’re becoming. That’s why I approach every session with the goal of capturing your personality, your style, and all the little things that make you you.

Whether you’re a parent helping your teen plan or a senior getting ready to shine, here’s what to expect and how to prep:

📅 Step 1: Pick a Date

We’ll start by locking in a session time that works best for you. I offer both weekday evenings and occasional weekends — and we’ll aim for that dreamy golden light if we’re shooting outdoors!

👗 What to Wear

Bring 2–3 outfit options that reflect your style. Think:

  • One “classic” look your parents will love (hello, yearbook photo)

  • One trendy or fun outfit that screams you

  • Optional: add something meaningful (jersey, letterman, band uniform, etc.)

Not sure what to wear? I offer styling help and access to my Client Closet — just ask!

📍 Location Vibes

Where do you feel most like yourself? Nature? Urban backdrops? Parking ramps? Waterfalls? Bluffs? Let’s choose a location that fits your vibe.

  • Grandad Bluff

  • Riverside International Friendship Gardens

  • Riverside Park

  • Pettibone Park

  • Myrick Park

  • Cass Street Bridge

  • Pearl Street area (murals & brick walls)

  • La Crosse Center parking ramp

  • Hixon Forest trails (Upper Hixon)

  • Paul E. Stry Nature Preserve

  • Goose Island County Park

  • Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge

  • Holland Sand Prairie (Holmen)

  • Brownsville Overlook (MN)

  • Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center

  • Perrot State Park (Trempealeau)

  • La Crosse River State Trail

  • Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Grounds

  • McGilvray “Seven Bridges” Road (Van Loon Wildlife Area)

  • Como Falls Park, Hokah, MN (waterfall setting)

🎶 Session Day Tips

  • Music: Feel free to bring your favorite playlist! Music helps set the mood and keep things relaxed.

  • Props: Got a baby photo or kindergarten pic? Many parents bring one for a quick “then and now” shot. It’s always a hit.

  • Family: I always include a quick parent + senior shot — nothing too fancy, just a sweet memory.

🧠 Questions I Ask Before Your Session

To make this session totally yours, I’ll ask:

  • What activities, sports, or hobbies are your thing?

  • Any special talents, pets, or cars to include?

  • Do you have a Pinterest board or inspiration images?

  • How would you describe your style or personality?

  • Any physical restrictions I should know about?

  • Do you have future plans you want to share or reflect in your photos?

These help me tailor everything just for you.

💡 Final Tips

  • Hydrate, get rest, and try on outfits in advance.

  • Don’t stress about posing — I’ll walk you through it all.

  • Most of all: relax. You’ve earned this moment.

Let’s make this session fun, effortless, and unforgettable.
Your senior year only happens once — let’s freeze time for just a little bit. 💫
